On average, U.S. families spend hundreds to over a thousand dollars per child per year on sports participation—including school athletic fees, equipment, uniforms, travel, and related expenses—making cost a significant barrier for many students’ involvement. In some districts, participation fees alone average more than $100 per sport, and many families incur additional costs for gear and travel.
